Vous avez peut-être remarqué une nouvelle et grande structure de bois au Champ des Possibles. Nous avons déjà entendu plusieurs commentaires de la part de plusieurs d’entre vous – certains très positifs et d’autres qui n’approuvent pas du tout –, donc nous avons pensé qu’il était important d’expliquer pourquoi cette structure se trouve désormais au Champ, et ce qu’il en adviendra.

1. Tout d’abord, cette structure de bois est une installation temporaire. Ce n’est pas permanent. Cependant, pour ceux et celles qui sont familiers avec les plans d’aménagement du Champ, l’installation d’une telle structure permettant de s’asseoir était déjà planifiée, au même emplacement, dans un an ou deux.  Ce coin repos est destiné à tous nos voisins (incluant les personnes travaillant dans les bureaux avoisinants), afin qu’ils viennent relaxer, prendre leurs goûters et profiter du Champ. Le plan initial a toujours été d’aménager la partie sud du champ en y installant quelques bancs, et de laisser le reste (partie nord) passablement intouché et sauvage. Ce compromis découle d’une longue série de consultations et de rencontres de planification qui nous ont permis de conclure que la présence de ces infrastructures émanait d’un réel besoin. Nous avons toutefois voulu en limiter la portée et l’impact sur le Champ.

2. Nous avons été approchés par les créateurs de cette grande structure de bois ; ces derniers ont fait don de leur œuvre au Champ. Or, en raison d’un délai très court, le conseil administratif des Amis du Champ des Possibles a dû prendre une décision très rapide. Le conseil administratif a fini par décider que nous devrions accepter cette offre pour la raison mentionnée ci-dessus, mais aussi parce que:

3. Avoir une telle infrastructure permettant de s’asseoir à cet endroit constituerait une réponse rapide à ceux qui le réclamaient depuis un moment déjà (nous avons réellement eu des demandes en ce sens).

4. L’installation d’une telle structure temporaire nous donnerait un aperçu de la réalité, pour voir si l’installation d’une infrastructure permanente à cet endroit serait adéquate ou non. Cela nous permettrait de savoir si la structure permanente devait être: a) plus grande ou plus petite; b) composée d’une seule unité ou de plusieurs petites unités; c) constituée d’un certain type de matériau; etc. En bref, cette structure temporaire devrait nous permettre de prendre une meilleure décision quant à l’installation d’une future structure permanente.

5. Cette structure temporaire serait également un moyen de relancer la discussion avec la communauté sur l’aménagement futur du Champ. Notre objectif initial a toujours été de consulter la communauté avant d’installer un coin repos permanent, soit en tenant une réunion de réflexions et de conception ouverte à tous et toutes, soit en donnant quelques exemples de structures temporaires, ajustables selon les idées et commentaires de la communauté. Cette structure temporaire peut justement servir de tremplin pour une telle discussion, parce que nous pouvons maintenant réellement expérimenter ce que représente l’aménagement d’un coin repos. Certains se sont dit frustrés par le manque de consultation avant l’installation de cette structure temporaire, et il est vrai que le court délai ne nous a pas permis de réellement sonder la communauté. Nous espérons toutefois que nous pourrons l’utiliser comme un test qui nous permet de choisir – en tant que communauté – la structure permanente occupera cet endroit.

6. Aussi, dans un mois, la ville doit amorcer la construction de la piste cyclable située à l’extrémité sud du champ, pour relier De Gaspé à Henri-Julien. Cela signifie qu’il y aura de grands équipements, du bruit et que le Champ sera un peu chamboulé pour les prochains mois. Nous avons donc pensé que la structure en bois pourrait servir de mur, pour bloquer une partie de ces travaux et ainsi, préserver le plus possible la tranquillité du Champ.

7. Il faut également noter que la structure est située en plein cœur d’une «zone rouge», c’est-à-dire qu’elle est contaminée et doit être réhabilitée. Nous devrons d’ailleurs bientôt réagir à cette contamination. Il est fort probable que nous y installerons des bancs, car nous pourrons nettoyer le sol pendant la phase de construction.

8. En termes de biodiversité, nous pouvons vous assurer que rien n’est compromis. Chaque année, la valeur de la biodiversité augmente, et continuera à augmenter. Or, pour ce faire, nous devons intervenir, notamment par l’abattage et le contrôle de certaines plantes introduites qui deviennent trop dominantes, au point d’empêcher la croissance de d’autres espèces. La tanaisie vulgaire, présente tout autour de la structure temporaire, en est un bon exemple. Cette plante, introduite, commence à être envahissante; nous devons réagir afin de mieux contrôler sa présence au Champ et préserver la présence d’une diversité d’espèces. La mise en place de la structure de bois dans cette zone ne nuira donc pas à la biodiversité.

9. Une amie du champ a communiqué avec nous, car elle était inquiète qu’une telle structure puisse encourager les fêtes nocturnes et les feux de joie, et donc, exacerber la présence de déchets et de dommages faits au Champ. Les feux de joie et les ordures sont des enjeux dont nous sommes conscients, et nous avons quelques idées sur la façon de faire face à ces défis. Mais, ce sera pour une autre publication!
10. Il y a beaucoup de choses à discuter sur cette nouvelle structure, sur la décontamination du terrain, sur les feux et les fêtes nocturnes, et plus encore. Nous prévoyons organiser un 5à7, vers le début du mois d’Octobre, afin que nous puissions tous se réunir et discuter de ces choses ensemble! J’espère que vous serez nombreux à être en mesure d’assister, afin d’apporter vos idées et partager vos passions !

You may have noticed a large new structure in the Champ des Possibles. We have already been hearing from many of you – with both positive reviews, and from those who absolutely do not like it – so we thought it was important to explain a little bit why this large installation is there, and what comes next.

1. First of all, the wooden structure is a temporary installation. It is not permanent. However, for those of you who are familiar with the plans for the Champ, there is supposed to be the installation of some sort of permanent seating in the same area in the next year or two. The seating area is meant for those in the neighbourhood (including those who work in the buildings) to come and relax and eat their lunch. The idea has always been to put in some seating in the southern part of the field, and leave everything else (to the north) largely untouched. This compromise came from a long series of consultations and design charettes that reached the conclusion that there was a need for some infrastructure, but that we wanted to limit its scope and impact.

2. We were approached by the people who had built this wooden structure and they offered it to the champ. There was a very tight delay and so the Board of Les Amis du Champ des Possibles needed to make a quick decision. The Board ended up deciding that we should accept this offer for the reason above, but also because:

3. Having a large seating infrastructure on this spot would provide a short-term seating place for those who ask for something (and there are people who ask).

4. Using this temporary structure would provide us with a real-life experiment to see how it would feel to have some infrastructure in this spot. It would let us get a sense of whether the permanent structure should be: a) bigger or smaller; b) one large unit or multiple small units; c) made of a certain type of material; etc. In short, it would help us really get a handle on what should come next as the permanent choice.

5. The structure would also be a way to kickstart a discussion with the community about what should come next. It has always been our plan to consult the community before installing the permanent seating area. Our thought has often been to have either a community design brainstorming event, or to start with a few examples of possibilities and then change according to the community’s ideas. This structure can serve as a jumping off point for such a discussion because we can ‘feel’ what the presence of having something in the field really is. Some have commented that they feel frustrated by the lack of consultation of the community before the installation of this temporary structure, and it is true that the short delay meant that there was no testing of the waters. But hopefully we can use this as a test that helps us choose – as a community – the permanent structure that will eventually occupy this spot.

6. In a month, the city is ‘supposed’ to start construction on the bike path at the southern end of the field, connecting De Gaspé to Henri-Julien. This means there will be large equipment, digging, and general ugliness for the next few months. It was thought the wooden structure could serve as a sort of wall to block some of that out and keep the rest of the field a bit calmer.

7. It should be noted as well that the structure is situated on top of a ‘red zone’, or a spot that is contaminated and needs to be rehabilitated. We will soon need to deal with the contaminated soil almost directly beneath this structure. It is likely that we will put future seating in this area because we can clear the soil during the construction phase.

8. In terms of the biodiversity, we can assure you that nothing is being compromised. Every year the biodiversity value of the field will continue to rise. But part of this will mean that we do need to intervene and in some places by cutting down and controlling some plants that are becoming too dominant and therefore are pushing out other plants. The tansy in this area is a good example. We have too much of it and we need to start managing its presence better. Placing the wooden structure in this zone will really not hurt the biodiversity of the field.

9. One friend of the field communicated with us that she was worried that having more seating in this area might exacerbate the parties and the bonfires, and therefore all the garbage and damage that seems to come from that.The bonfires and garbage are certainly issues that we are aware of, and we do have some ideas of how to try and deal with these challenges. But that is for another post!

1. There are lots of things to discuss about this seating, about the decontamination of the field, about the bonfires, and more. We are planning to organize a 5à7 sometime towards the beginning of October so we can all come together and discuss these things together! Hopefully many of you will be able to attend and bring your ideas and passion to share.
